Vodafone pre-registering customers for iPhone 3G in India

Vodafone pre-registering customers for iPhone 3G in IndiaIn a bid to undermine Bharti Airtel’s latest announcement about the availability of the iPhone 3G on their network later this year, Vodafone Essar has already started registrations for the much-awaited Apple device, scheduled for a release on July 11th in other countries. Interested customers can now book an iPhone 3G on Vodafone’s website and their retail outlets. Although there are no definite dates from both sides of the pond, these two major operators seem confident that the iPhone 3G will land in India “later this year.”

The iPhone isn’t exactly an unknown quantity on the subcontinent given its availability on the gray market soon after its release last year. But it remains to be seen what route the iPhone 3G will take, as there will be no substantial difference for a customer in network speeds, since the Indian Government is still a long way from making a decision on the 3G spectrum auction.
With both the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G being released on two major networks spaced only months apart, most iPhone lovers would definitely wait for the 3G version to arrive, since nonavailability of 3G wouldn’t necessariy mean it won’t kick off later on. I am sure Vodafone’s admittance that the iPhone 3G will work at 2G speeds only will not make much of a difference for people who have known what the famous device is capable of.
