Handset makers to hit both high- and low-end markets in India

With the increasing number of mobile phone users in India, handset makers including Cal-Comp Electronics and Inventec Appliances have both already entered into cooperation with local telecommunication vendors to supply entry-level CDMA and GSM handsets, while High Tech Computer (HTC) plants to launch an own-brand Windows Mobile-based high-end smartphone and is also expected to work with India-based Reliance.

Although entry-level handsets still occupy the largest proportion of the India handset market, makers in Taiwan predict that smartphone shipments in 2007 will be around 2.8 million units, while in 2010, the number will increase to five million.

The handset market in India totaled over 225 million users at the end of November this year and in March of 2008, India will possibly surpass the US and to become the second largest mobile phone market, according to market reports.
