Even if companies don’t spare an effort in their attempt to make a buck on the expense on crazy people that feel like spending money just like they used to, before the economic crisis, it seems that more and more manufacturers and carriers are interested in releasing affordable handsets.Therefore, if you’re a budget-conscious type of guy, you’d probably appreciate the idea Orange came up with, to introduce a brand new affordable device, equipped with a touchscreen. Called Orange Vegas, the cell phone is a dual band GSM/GPRS and comes with a 2.4 inch TFT touchscreen display, which most probably has a QVGA resolution.
After seeing how the phone looks like, here you have the features list: 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth connectivity, MP3 player, FM radio, an internal memory of 64MB and a microSD card slot for expanding the memory with no more than 1GB. Weighing approximately 84 grams, the Orange Vegas provides up to 3 hours of talk time and up to 7 days of stand-by time.
For the moment the Orange phone can be seen on the official website of the carrier, in two different colors, black and pink, but you can’t buy it. Not yet. And even we don’t know it for sure, we can only assume that the Orange Vegas will become available in several European markets. Scosche Goes Green with solCHAT Car SpeakerPhone
Scosche has introduced its latest Bluetooth speaker phone, the solCHAT. The solCHAT is powered by an integrated solar panel and lithium ion rechargeable battery combination. Utilizing voice announce technology, the solCHAT announces calls as they come in so users can keep their eyes on the road while driving.Designed for simplify uses, the speakerphone has only three visible buttons— volume up, volume down and the answer/hang-up multifunction button. Using voice announce, the speaker phone let’s users know who’s calling and actually guides them through the initial Bluetooth 2.0 device pairing process. MWC2009: Digicel and ZTE Launch Coral-200 Solar Powered Phone
Digicel Group and ZTE has launched the Coral-200-Solar, which will be available in selected market in June this year. The company has been providing its customer with low-cost or free portable solar chargers, now it has decided to join the solar panel integrated mobile phone.Mr Xiong Hui, VP of ZTE’s handset division says: “As mobile phones continue to proliferate in emerging markets and are widely used where electricity is available, mobile operators are demanding more innovative handsets. We are confident that the Digicel Coral-200-Solar is such a product and that solar power technology can be used in any type of handset. U121, a new Huawei mobile phone on the market
Huawei Technologies, the largest Chinese supplier of networking and telecommunications equipment, has just released a third generation of an old device, called Huawei U121. The first two generations of the mobile phone are the Playset, which is commercialized by Play, a Polish network, and the Vodafone 716, sold in UK.The new Huawei mobile phone is aimed at people who are more interested in a simple wireless mobile experience, without neglecting the style features. The device is made from high-quality materials such as stainless steel, which might be used for its durability.
When it comes to the specifications, the Huawei U121 include 1 1.8 inches TFT display (with 262K color), a 1.3 megapixel CMOS camera, video capabilities, video streaming, 3.5 millimeters standard earphone jack, the possibility for expandable memory with microSD card support, support EQ, an integrated FM radio, Bluetooth 1.2, email/MMS/WAP2.0, miniUSB support and 3G connectivity.
As far as the music experience is concerned, the phone supports various formats such as MP3, AAC, AAC+ and eAAC+, while video formats it is compatible with include MP4, 3GP and 3G2. In addition, there’s a shortcut key that makes a whole lot easier the access to your favorite music.
The operating frequencies of the handset are UMTS 2100 MHz and GPRS/GSM 900/1800/1900MHZ. Measuring 103 x 45 x 14.5 millimeters and measuring 90 grams (with battery included), the 800 mAh Li-ion battery provides up to 270 hours of stand-by time (WCDMA/GSM), up to 175 minutes (GSM) and 145 minutes (WCDMA) of talk time for voice calls and up to 105 minutes of talk time for video calls.
For now, this new Huawei mobile phone is said to be available only in the Russian market. However, there are good chances for it to start selling within the United States and the rest of European countries in the near future.

Flickr Mobile Revamped with New Video Sharing Feature
Flickr has just revamped its mobile site with new added features and enhancements. You can now browse and view Flickr videos on your iPhone and iPod Touch. All videos uploaded starting yesterday will be available in its mobile site. Intel Hopes to Bring Free Energy to Mobile Devices
Intel on Friday said it is researching technology to harvest free energy from the environment, which could lead to devices such as mobile phones running for indefinite periods without recharging.The company is working on tiny sensors that can capture energy from sources such as sunlight and body heat. In the future, such energy could be used to power personal electronic devices such as cell phones.
There are already watches available that are powered by body heat, as well as prototype smartphones with display screens that double as solar cells, said Justin Rattner, chief technology officer at Intel, during a press event. Intel is also looking at powering a mobile phone by harvesting the energy the user generates by moving the phone's trackball. The radiation of cell phone or TV signals might also be used to power devices.
"Wouldn't it be nice if, in fact, you were able to go almost indefinitely without charging the battery, if you were able to scavenge enough free energy from the environment?" Rattner said.
Intel's initial efforts revolve around the sensors, which could power themselves using free energy. Recharging themselves by scavenging free energy allows the sensors to continuously record and transmit readings over wireless networks, without any human involvement.
For example, an accelerometer buried in the wall of a building could automatically recharge itself by harvesting the energy of radiation from a cell phone tower, allowing it to continuously take and transmit readings of the building's movement.
"It wouldn't have any batteries, you wouldn't have to come out and service them, and you don't have to run any power. They are completely self-contained, and most importantly, self-powered as a result of scavenging energy from the environment," Rattner said.
Intel has also designed a self-charging neural implant that can monitor bodily functions and transmit its readings wirelessly, Rattner said.
"I never have to ... come along with some sort of external fixture and have to recharge this. These become ... install-and-forget systems, because they can scavenge energy from the environment and power themselves up," Rattner said.
Intel has not marketed such a sensor yet, as its research is still ongoing, Rattner said. Sensors use just a fraction of the power demanded by typical mobile devices, and it may take a while before the energy-harvesting technology can power larger items.
For now, the research is intended to provide a broader view of energy harvesting, and many Intel product groups are showing interest in it.
"We haven't been driving it as an Intel product; it's not on anyone's road map at this point. It's part of our broader effort in both sensors and energy harvesting," Rattner said.

Sonim XP3 Enduro, a rugged cell phone that goes underwater
Sonim Technologies announced a couple of days ago that their family of rugged phones will extend with their latest addition, which will be known under the name of the Sonim XP3 Enduro. The device is said to be the successor of XP1, but maybe more important than this, the phone is also claimed to be one of the toughest GSM phones that are now available on the market.The Sonim XP3 is an indestructible cell phone, as tough as a mobile phone can get, and can withstand more shocks and drops than its predecessor. More than that, the handset can be fully submersed for 30 minutes up to a meter deep. Not to mention the fact that the device is also certified to behave itself when it comes to a drop to concrete from as high as 2 meters. Pretty good, right?
The XP3 features an IP-57 protection rating and is also equipped with a 810F Military grade rating for salt, fog, humidity, transport and thermal shock. Redefining the term “rugged”, the phone’s buttons (the keyboard, more precisely) is meant to function very well, even beyond 500,000 pushes. The Sonim XP3 was designed to be capable of operating as long as it’s needed, if the temperatures are somewhere between -20C and +60.

This is one option you couldn’t find on the XP1 and that is now available!You must admit that Sonim XP3 isn’t a very “rich” device, as far as the features are concerned, taking into consideration the fact that they are modest in comparison with ones of a regular phone. Still, they’re satisfactory for a rugged handset. Therefore, it has tri-band GSM/GPRS connectivity (900/1800/1900 MHz), a 128x160 pixels display with 65k colors, 3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 1.2 and WAP 2.0. Measuring 118.8 x 56.3 x 24.6 millimeters and weighing 140 grams, the device provides up to 220 hours of stand-by time and up to 5.5 hours of talk-time.
The Sonim XP3 is expected to be released in the near future, meaning November 2008, in European countries like Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the UK. The price is estimated at approximately 290 euro (around $370) after taxes and subsidies. On the other hand, rumors say that, right in time for the Christmas holiday, Vodafone UK will make this device available, so that the new rugged cell phone will be yours for free if you get yourself a contract agreement.

The TV phone concept features an active mechanical keypad that appears on pressing the screen and a spring loaded cover that guards the battery, memory card and SIM card.
Graphite Mobile comes with a 2.5 megapixel camera with autofocus and Xenon flash, 3 dedicated camera shutter/stereo speakers, 4 USB ports and 5 dedicated 3.5 mm audio ports. In addition, there are also a 0.6 MP video camera and an on / off translucent button.The very good news you’d be happy to hear is that the DVB-H technology based concept phone does look production worthy as all its integrated components are already available in the market. You are more than used to this type of concept devices that are developed by all sorts of designers, from newcomers to those who are in the business for some time, and the odds of turning them into reality are very encouraging. Mobiado unveils four new luxury cell phones
As if there weren’t already enough Mobiado luxury cell phones on the market, the Canadian manufacturer has announced the release of four new handsets: Professional 105 EM White, Professional 105 EM Red, Professional 105 EM CLB Black and Professional 105 EM CLB Silver.
The first two phones are part of the Professional 105 EM Special Edition series which continues the tradition of the Executive Model series. They are built from exquisite materials like maple burl wood, titanium, sapphire crystals and 24K gold. Burl wood is highly prized by artists because of its unique beauty and rarity. Every 105 EM Special Edition is as different and unique as every rare exotic tree is.
Each pair of wood inserts is CNC machined from the same piece of solid maple burl wood. This is a guarantee to the consistent grain structure on both sides of the phone. The maple burl wood is then inlayed into a nickel plated, brass frame. While the screws are made of titanium, the button of the 105EM Special Edition White are sapphire crystal, hand painted with silver paint, in order to produce front and back surfaces made entirely of sapphire crystals (225 carats).
As far as the Red version is concerned, the wood inserts are also CNC machined from the same piece of solid box burl wood, for the exactly same reason. The box burl wood is then inlayed into a 5 micron thick 24-karat gold plated, brass frame. The screws are gold plated brass and the buttons are sapphire crystals, hand painted with 24-karat gold.
Based on the construction of the Professional 105 ZAF lineup, the entire front and back of the 105EM Special edition phones have been crafted from large pieces of sapphire crystal, providing a modern minimalist look with a wear resistance second only to diamond. 4 SIMs Magma Phone Concept
I’m sure everybody has already heard about Dual SIM phones, as they are very fashionable at the moment. The fundamental characteristic of such a device is that it integrates two Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs). When dual-SIM adapters are available, they allow cellphones to contain two SIMs and to switch from one to the other as requires. Some other phones are designed to work with both SIMs, meaning that they are active at the same time.Using two SIM cards in one phone is an option people are willing to consider more and more nowadays, because this way they can have a personal and a business number with one single handset. You save money, of course, but you will also say goodbye to carrying two mobile phones on you all the time, since manufacturers have been coming up with ingenious ways of dealing the situation.

NTT Docomo Separate Keitai splits in two
CEATEC 2008, Japan, seems to be the perfect place to get in touch with world’s latest inventions in technology. The event is highly expected worldwide because it gives manufacturers the chance to reveal the results of their work and receive answers from participants.NTT Docomo Inc amazed the public by introducing a concept cell phone that doesn’t follow the rules of cell phones as we have known them so far. The exhibited prototype of the “Separate Keitai” can be split in two pieces, a screen and a keyboard segment. Yes, don’t be so surprised, everything’s possible! And this mobile phone’s key operation part can be separated from the display part as it was shown at CEATEC.
The handset gives users the chance to make a call while reading an email or checking their electronic schedule. Moreover, they can even use the separate unit as an MP3 player. The prototype has the same shape as normal foldable mobile phones, but the operation part and the display part are synced with each other through a magnet, and they can be detached by only using a small force. This way, both of the parts have their individuality very well defined and can be operated and viewed when they are separated. However, the prototype had its two parts joined via Bluetooth wireless connection.The surprise doesn’t end here, though: the touchscreen reacts to the way the users are holding it. For example, when the display part is vertically joined, the operation part shows a numeric keypad for making a call. When it is horizontally attached, the operation part displays a character entry screen. The company said that in this position the horizontal function can be turned into a gamepad for some mobile video game action.
For other applications, the display part can be used as a music player while having your operation part stored in a bag. In addition, like exchangeable covers of mobile phones, there will be various combinations of display parts and operation parts. Incrudo Phantom Most Durable Brick Phone?
Even if Incrudo is only making 10 pcs of Incrudo Phantom luxury phone, who would want to buy this brick phone with 230 grams body weight? Claimed to be the most durable phone in the world, it is protected by 3mm thick metal. There is even a 4mm thick of sapphire crystals protecting the display screen. The Incrudo Phantom is lack of built in WiFi or GPS and 3G support. It does have a 8GB internal memory and 3.2 megapixel camera with the ability to record video in VGA resolution. Incrudo Phantom will be available in Russia with a price tag of about 900 USD.

NTT Docomo unveils cell phone projector at CEATEC 2008
Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (also known as CEATEC) is an annual trade show held every year in October, in Makuhari Messe, Japan, since the first CEATEC in 2000. The event is said to be the Japanese equivalent of International Consumer Electronics Show, a similar show which takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada.This year’s CEATEC edition has brought several remarkable inventions, more than the last few years combined, and the latest product NTT Docomo unveiled at the event does no more, no less than to continue the trend. The company is very well known for gripping the Japanese cell phone market and for recently losing the rights to the Apple’s iPhone in favor of SoftBank, which seemed to be the perfect solution, despite Docomo’s powerful network and local brand recognition.
NTT Docomo Inc. revealed, therefore, the prototype of a mobile phone that would double as a video projector and the demonstration was made during the CEATEC 2008 event.
The company used for this handset its existing model which was integrated an ultrasmall projector. Red, green and blue LEDs are used as a light source. In addition, the device features a “DLP Pico” chipset ( DLP stands for digital light processing) designed by Texas Instruments Inc. and consists of a DMD (digital micromirror device) downsized for mobile use, its driver LSI and so forth. The projector has 480 x 320 pixels (HVGA) and a luminance of 7.5m, meanwhile the power consumption of the projector module comes to 3W.
The projector is designed to screen a 20-inch image from a distance of about 80 centimeters and to offer approximately 100 minutes of operating time. It’s more than enough to watch a TV show, podcast, or a short film. As I was saying before, a demonstration took place at the event. The handset projected images and its built-in Li-Ion secondary battery was being charged in the same time. The projector functioned during this test for only 15 to 20 minutes per charge. This is because an existing battery for mobile phones was used, the company said.In order to get this new handset to mass production there must be done some retouches. First of all, it’s necessary to reduce the heat generated from the projector module, then the power consumption, the cost and, why not, the size of the projector module.
It’s a great concept, there’s no doubt about it, but would it see the light of the day? I don’t know about you, but the company is confident in the success the projector will score, and plans to mount it after three years at earliest, “but only in the highest-end models”.

Furthermore, it also allows teens to chat and text, and offers them built-in games, ringtones, wallpapers and music, and video samples.

ZTE Unveils U990 with HSDPA and TD-SCDMA Supported
ZTE Corporation announced the U990 device, the world’s first HSDPA TD-SCDMA mobile handset. The new handset was first unveiled last week and is ZTE’s third TD-SCDMA (China’s 3G Network) mobile handset model. The new model supports dual mode TD-SCDMA/EDGE allowing seamless transitions between the two networks. Its HSDPA speed is capable of reaching 2.8Mbps for downlink transmission and 384kbps for uplink transmission.The U990 handset runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system and is the first ZTE handset integrated with a Microsoft OS. ZTE’s U990 also has a full touch-screen and is equipped with both GPS/AGPS navigation technologies.

i-mate Jama 101 Launched in India, via Airtel
India's largest mobile carrier, Bharti Airtel, has recently announced the release of a new Windows Mobile Pocket PC: i-mate Jama 101. Not quite a great looker, i-mate Jama 101 runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional, and is targeted at business users.The features of i-Mate Jama 101 include a 2.4-inch TFT touchscreen display with 240 x 320 pixels, tri-band GSM connectivity (900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz), Outlook email, HTML browser, document viewer and editor, Bluetooth, a 2 Megapixel camera and expandable memory. The Pocket PC measures 105 x 52.5 x 15.5 millimeters, weighs 103 grams, and packs a Li-Po 1020 mAh battery said to last up to 4 hours in talk-time mode or up to 150 hours in stand-by mode.

Jama 101 should be available across India as of now, for a retail price of 12,900 INR (285 USD, or 200 Euros). While this is not much to pay for a Pocket PC, keep in mind that this one doesn't have the latest Windows Mobile 6.1, and its overall design can't really compete with the likes of HTC Touch Diamond, Samsung Omnia or Palm Treo Pro (to name just a few of the latest Windows Mobile handsets).
