Agile Lie Detector for iPhone

The application costs $8 to own and I am sure you have figured out buy now the only way it could possibly analyze a human’s reactions. Our voice. That voice stress is analyzed and displayed on the screen in a 3D spectograph. Voice stress could be caused by other reasons besides lying though. And some people lie for a living so you wouldn’t be able to pick those lie up on an iPhone application. Nevertheless it’s an application you’d have fun using from time to time.
Truphone offers a free iPhone-to-iPhone call

The company also offers inbound Truphone calling, making it possible to enjoy completely free Truphone calls between two iPhones.

Tioti TV+ for iPhone, iPod touch in the App Store today

It’s a really good idea to catch-up our favorite TV contents amid the dramatic increase in the number of channels available today. And now, we — iPhone users at least — don’t need to confuse choosing some 300 channels ago for 8.30pm, for example. Just use this applications.
The company explains:
On start-up, Tioti TV+ immediately displays ‘now and next’ information for all UK TV channels. Precisely which channels are displayed is completely customizable; choose to display only those channels available to you according to your TV package, or choose channel-by-channel which ones to display or ‘turn off’.
Opening a particular programme causes the typical listings-style programme information to be displayed. But this is the point at which Tioti TV+ starts to shine.
You can choose to ‘mark’ programmes, then, after perhaps marking multiple programmes across multiple channels, you can select ‘My TV’ – which promptly causes Tioti TV+ to display your personal TV channel, showing which channel to be watching, and when, in order to fit in everything you marked.
If you’re not going to be at home or even if you’re on the other side of the world on holiday then, if you have the Sky+ service, you can use Tioti TV+ for the iPhone to remotely set your Sky box to record any programme with just two clicks, ready for viewing when you get home.

10,000 apps now available to iPhone users

The number of iPhone apps surged in September 2008 when nearly 3,000 were submitted to the iTunes store, according to 148apps.com. For the past three months until November, the number hovered at around the 2,500 mark.
The site also said nearly a fourth (2,322) of the iPhone apps are games. Next are entertainment (1,117), utility (1,017, education (736) and productivity (516) apps.

Get A Free Backup Solution With PIM Backup

Introduction
Don’t get me wrong, PIM Backup is not just for me based on my scenario but it’s actually a PIM Backup/Restore application which means you can use it to backup all your data. While it may be free, don’t let the price tag turn you off because some things in life are in fact free. It may not have some of the features that commercial software such as Spb Bakcup might have but surprisingly, it has some features that commercial software do not and you might come to appreciate as I will share with you.
For those interested, there are 2 versions, depending on your platform. There is a WM2003SE and a WM5/6 version so choose accordingly. I would also recommend you visit the developer’s site for guides, change logs and even other useful applications.
But Do I Really Need This?
Before you continue this review, you might be wondering if you really need another PIM application. Doesn’t ActiveSync already allow you to sync such data with your PC, thereby creating a backup? Granted, but PIM Backup allows you to do that and a lot more. If you are not using ActiveSync for such basic backups, I would recommend this program. And even if you are using ActiveSync for such backup processes, I urge you to read on and find out why you should consider PIM Backup.
Schedule Your Backups
The important thing about backups is that you need to do it constantly be it daily or every weekday or a period which you set. The problem with this is that it can be a chore for you to always to remember to do it. PIM Bakup takes the trouble out of the equation and lets you schedule your backups according to your preference.

It even lets you decide how many copies of backup you want to keep. For example, if you do a daily backup and chose 3, then it would keep the last 3 days of backup. When it does the backup on the 4th day, it will delete the backup made on the first day. This way, your storage capacity is under control. and you just set it once and forget about it until disaster strikes. When that happens, you’ll be glad you have a recent backup to fall back on.
Choose Which Data To Backup

Maybe you only use your Pocket PC for Tasks and Calendars and instead have all your Contacts on another phone. In that case, you can just choose to backup your Tasks and Appointments. Or maybe it’s the other way around for you which is also no problem for PIM Backup because you can have your call logs, contacts and speed dials added to the file. The combinations are endless and I am sure you can find a combination to suit your needs.

Not Just PIM Backup Though

Choose How To Restore

Based on my review scenario, I would need to restore my old PIM after I am done with the review. The problem is, I would need to remove (clear) the PIM before I do a backup or it would result in duplicate/unwanted entries. To counter this problem PIM Backup has several restore options, based on the data involved.
For example, if I am dealing with appointments, the options available to me include
* Delete all existing appointments from database before restoration.
* Add only new appointments to the database.
* Add new appointments and update existing appointments in the database.
If I were dealing with contacts, the options changes to:
* Delete all existing contacts from database before restoration.
* Add only new contacts to the database.
* Add new contacts and update existing appointments in the database.
* Allow duplicates to be created.

Read The Backup On A PC
There are 2 methods for backup, binary and text. The former is faster while the latter, slower. It makes up for this lack of speed by allowing you to read the data on your PC or any other platform that supports the text format. This might be useful for users like me who need to create bogus entries for screen shot purposes and we can do it real quick using the text format. You might think of other uses of this that would be useful for you.
It’s Really Fast And Small
I chose the binary backup method and I managed to backup all my PIM in under a minute. Of course this would depend on the volume of your PIM. It took about the same time on Spb Backup (slightly faster though) but bear in mind that I could not back up my speed dials and call log on Spb Backup.

The file of the backup is also relatively small but again, this depends on your PIM volume. PIM Backup had a size of only 131.4K while Spb Backup had a size of 1.0MB. Considering that PIM Backup had more date, it was rather surprising that it had a smaller file size. Both had the compress option turned on.
What Are The Setbacks?
While this program seems all great, there are still some problems being worked out by the developer.
For one, there seem to be a problem with MMS, more specifically with the attachments. If you are a heavy user MMS (also known as picture messages), do bear this in mind. If you aren’t, then you have nothing to worry about.
This is not a problem but more a lack of feature. At the moment, you cannot convert between the text backup to binary and vice versa. The developer is working on this and hopefully will get something working in the next version of so. Until that happens, you will have to choose between speed and readability.
Suggestions
I think for a free application, it has already exceeded expectations. However, I think that some improvements wouldn’t hurt and if the developer chooses to implement them, it would be awesome:
* Self restoration file. Currently, you need to use PIM Backup to restore the files. If the developer could make the files standalone, it would be on par with the other commercial solutions out there.
* Registry Backup. Since this is more than a PIM backup, it would be great to add in a registry backup tool as well.
These are my suggestions but if you have more to contribute, feel free to add them in the comments below.
Conclusion
I did not experience any problems with the backup and application and so far, the application looks good. Backup and restoration worked as I had expected it to. If you have no backup solution at the moment, I would highly recommend that you get PIM Backup. There are 2 versions of the program, one for WM2003SE and another for WM5/6 so do choose accordingly.
Will this replace a commercial backup application? The short answer is No. The long answer is that it depends on what your needs are. Keeping in mind that PIM Backup only backs up PIM and certain files/folders, it will not restore your device back to the last known configuration unlike the commercial solutions out there.
As with all backup applications out there, you never wish you have to use it but when the time comes, you will be glad you have one. So if you have to do so, head over to this website and choose the application that’s right for you.

Opera Software confirms it's Opera Mobile 9.5 that will run on the HTC Diamond

As you may already know, the latest version of Opera Mobile brings such features as tabbed browsing, improved text wrap, landscape mode, ability to call a phone number right from a web page, history, bookmarks, and copy text to clipboard. In addition, such things as save page for offline browsing, web address auto-complete and password manager make your think you're not surfing the web on a mobile phone, but on a full-fledged desktop computer. Hence, HTC's President and CEO Peter Chou's comment: "We have worked very closely with Opera Mobile to deliver a feature set and browsing experience that is optimized for mobile, but viewed like it would on a PC."
Nokia Maps 2.0 sheds its Beta tag

Yesterday Nokia and France Telecom formed a joint venture, where Nokia is responsible for providing digital mapping solutions. The improved Nokia Maps application is called the Nokia Maps 2.0 and has given focus on enhancing Car Navigation, pedestrian navigation; there are enhanced city guides available. The car navigation functionality of this application has visual and voice guidance on every turn so you will never get lost. Similar kind of turn by run navigation is provided for pedestrians.
The new UI of the application also offers satellite images. At last Nokia has made use of it’s acquisition of Navteq, cause Nokia Maps 2.0 has vector maps that are provided by Navteq. From last two years Nokia is very keen on becoming a company that provides Location based services and with this kind of applications, Nokia is getting closer to becoming one and once in a while, acquisitions like Navteq also help.
I have a thought, which is lingering in my mind from quite sometime and needs to come out, with these kind of map and navigation applications coming, we humans will forget to use your brain to search a place. When you are in a new city, finding places is like an opportunity to talk with locals and increase social contact but these application will quickly give you whatever you are looking for…then what bout our social contact?????
Anyways, Download Nokia Maps
Skype runs on feature phones now, sort of

Skype recently announced the availability of a beta version of their latest application - their well-known Skype client for regular feature phones - no need for Wi-Fi, no need for smartphones - just plain old Java (J2ME). That announcement made us cheer - at least for a moment that is - then we went on and read the fine print.

Using Skype for chats
The new Java Skype client currently officially supports phones by four major manufacturers. If your phone is not in the supported list, there's no bad in trying out the application anyways - like we did. We downloaded the version for Nokia 6233 and installed it on a Nokia 6500 classic we had lying around (the only feature phone around the office really).
The new Skype client ran just fine - no glitches or lags whatsoever. It logged in to our test Skype account pretty fast - both on a 2G network and on a 3G one. Texting was flawless either - at least as much the 6500c keypad allowed it to be. Nice graphics and nice font rendering - it feels as natural as using the desktop version. The only bug we found here is changing the current status - it sometimes needed to be set twice in order to kick in.
We enjoyed having a text conversation over the desk and that's about it. Our hands itched for something more - after all Skype is meant to be used for calls as easily as texting is.
Using Skype for calls
Currently calls can be made only if you live in one of the supported countries - Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden and UK. There's a specific reason for that, but more on that will be found in the next paragraph. You can of course enter a fake mobile number and fool Skype into thinking you are in the UK for example - without that the Call feature is not accessible.
Making VoIP calls over the underpowered feature phone hardware may seem a mystery at first. But when you go on and read the fine print on Skype's website it turns out it that calls are not made over the data connection established by the Java client as it's usual for VoIP calls. Instead the client prompts you to dial a local transfer number (gateway) based on your number you have entered (now you see why there is a list of supported countries).
The so-called VoIP calls are actually made through a dedicated Skype gateway set up in your home country specifically for that purpose. It seems fair enough if you can get that number in your special pricing group - otherwise you would have to pay for both the gateway call AND the data traffic AND SkypeOut credits (SkypeOut is charged for incoming calls too).
While it may sound like a rough deal, you can always choose not to opt for the call feature - the Java application still remains a great portable text messenger and you only have to pay for the data traffic (if you are not on a fixed-rate data plan that is).
You can download Skype from the official website.

iPhone SDK apps to require Apple approval and iTunes distribution - I am So Shocked!

By a round of applause, how many of you think the more open development of the hacked iPod/iPhone community will prevail in the end? Stop clapping, I can’t hear you anyways, but I don’t see why the genius developers for the hacked iPod/iPhone would want to even mess with Apple and all that red tape, it would probably be less of a frustration to constantly update your app every time a new firmware is released than to try and deal with Apple on this.

McAfee Research Reveals Majority of Consumers Concerned Over Mobile Safety

The McAfee Mobile Security Report 2008 discusses in detail users' experiences of traditional and emerging mobile services and their awareness and perceptions of mobile security issues.
Other key findings revealed the following:
* 86% of users are worried about security risks posed to their mobile handset such as fraudulent bill increases or information loss or theft
* More that one third (34%) of global mobile users question the general safety of mobile devices and services
* At least 79% of consumers are knowingly using unprotected devices, with an additional 15% unsure of security levels
* More than half of subscribers (59%) expect mobile operators to take primary responsibility for protecting mobile devices and services
While confidence levels for traditional voice and messaging services remain comparatively high, more than half of all respondents (55%) expressed concerns about mobile payments and banking services. Likewise, more than 40% were worried about mobile multimedia downloads and mobile vouchers and ticketing. Frequent mobile Internet surfers showed levels of concern 80% higher than those who have never used such services. Overall, more than 72% of users expressed concerns regarding the safety of using emerging mobile services, with concern rates rising with market maturity.
Mobile security incidents may not yet rival the scale and scope of PC threats but they are increasing in volume and sophistication. More than one in ten (14%) of global mobile users have already been exposed to mobile virus incidents, either directly or they know someone who has been infected. This awareness strongly impacts user confidence with 80% worried about the possibility of a mobile virus infecting their friends and colleagues.
Mobile messaging is also growing in prevalence. More than a third of subscribers (38.6%) claim to typically receive 'annoying' spam messages at least once a month. In Japan this rises to more than a quarter (26.1%) getting spammed daily.
Despite growing concerns, at least 79% of consumers are knowingly using unprotected devices, with an additional 15% unsure of security levels. Almost 60% of mobile users expect mobile operators to take primary responsibility for protecting their mobile devices and services and more than half (56%) believe security features should be pre-installed on the handset at the time of purchase and provided free of charge.
The research was conducted by Datamonitor amongst 2000 mobile consumers with responses spread evenly across the US, UK and Japan.
